Turkey's security-related considerations for Syria & Iraq
The Kurdish minorities in several Middle Eastern countries have never been close to fulfilling their historical dream of creating a Kurdistan, which will inevitably mean cutting territories out of nations currently with sovereignty over them. But they keep trying, and by the same measure those nations are resisting Kurdish efforts. None more so than Turkey, which has often raided Kurdish enclaves in neighboring Syria and Iraq, in order to degrade the power of what it considers terror groups bent on striking within Turkey. Over the last two months President Recep Tayyip Erdogan ordered two such spring operations, first in Iraq and now in Syria. What are the aims and implications of these cross-border moves, and how are they impacting Ankara’s relationships with Moscow, Washington and regional capitals?
