Under President Recep Tayep Erdogan, Turkey has changed its global positioning system in two important and to some extent overlapping ways. A long-time member of NATO, an alliance created to contain Soviet ambitions, Ankara has recently moved away from Washington and Brussels and towards Moscow; and as a regional power, Turkey has assumed a pro-active policy in the Levant, the Mediterranean, the Caucasus and the Balkans. Are these ventures or adventures? Is Turkey better off with this break with traditional policies?
