The Eastern Mediterranean dispute: a strategic overview
During the cold war, the Eastern Mediterranean was considered a potential front involving American and Soviet Naval task forces. The Israeli Navy also clashed with those of Egypt and Syria. But now the picture is much more complicated, with the main problem being Turkish policy under President Erdogan, who alienated Israel, Greece, Cyprus, Italy and Egypt in a dispute over sovereignty and energy. As an aside, there are also Israeli and Lebanese claims and counter claims regarding a gas-rich corner of their common maritime boundary.
