After years of intensive and mostly futile efforts, Lebanon and Israel have launched overt negotiations in order to demarcate their maritime border, between the port cities of Beirut and Haifa and West towards the presumably offshore energy treasure that lays beneath the Mediterranean, in the direction of Cyprus. Delegations will be meeting under United Nations auspices at Nakura, in Southwest Lebanon, with American mediation and the Lebanese military representing its government so as to bypass the thorny question of Iran and its proxy Hezbollah influencing Beirut’s position.
What is at stake and what are the prospects for an agreement which will benefit all parties?
