Forces of nature have taken center stage in Israel’s Northern border and beyond, where winter is always harsh and lack of energy supplies make conditions even more unforgiving. The earthquakes devastating parts of Turkey and Northern Syria showed the generous and skilled face of the Israel Defense Forces, whose search and rescue teams worked relentlessly to find, extricate and take care of survivors. But this tragedy may only delay a return to age-old conflicts, between Ankara and Kurdish separatists south of the border and between Israel and its hostile neighbors in Syria and Lebanon. What are we to expect, when winter turns into spring and things return to what passes in this region for normal?
