Last week, Israel and the second most-powerful militant organization in the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, exchanged fire for a couple of days – until Egyptian mediators, as well as others, brokered a temporary cessation of hostilities. The most important and surprising feature of this conflagration, was the absence of the enclave’s rulers – the Islamist Hamas organization – which considered its interests and decided to stand aloof.
