Is Israel’s democracy under threat amid looming judicial reform?
After only three weeks in office, Israel’s government under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is involved in a heated debate with its opponents in Parliament and the public. Justice Minister Yariv Levin, with Netanyahu’s backing, has unveiled an ambitious plan to redo the country’s judicial branch, moving its center of gravity from judges and legal advisors towards politicians. Levin argues that it is a necessary reform to fix an imbalance. In contrast, his critics warn that it will destroy Israel’s precious democracy. Regardless of the merits on either side, the conflict over the Levin plan threatens to tear Israel’s society apart. Can the gap be bridged?
