For more than twenty years now, ever since the American invasion of Iraq made the Tehran leadership fearful of a follow-up move against Iran, its military nuclear program has been advanced but constrained, lest an attack by either Israel or the US or both destroy this precious investment so dear to the Regime’s heart. But over the last three months, momentous developments took away two of the Islamic Republic’s Mideastern partners, first Hezbollah and then the Assad regime. Now the Ayatollahs are faced with a time-critical dilemma : should they wait out the remainder of President Biden’s term in order to probe the incoming Administration’s policy of pressure and bargaining? Or does it make more sense, from their point of view, to try a mad dash towards enriching enough fissile material for their first nuclear warheads? Or should they conduct an underground atomic test, so that the second Trump term starts from a new baseline? Put simply : how willing are they to collide with Washington and Jerusalem?
