In the 16 years since the militant Islamic organization Hamas evicted the Palestinian Authority from the Gaza Strip and brought about a series of clashes with the Israel Defense Forces, very little happened between these two adversaries without Hamas causing it. On the rare occasions it did not, Hamas decided to let its junior partner and competitor, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, bear the brunt of Israeli retaliation. So when the relative quiet on the Gaza border was broken for several weeks, beginning in mid-September, with violent demonstrations, incendiary balloons and IEDs, the question which presented itself once again is why, to what end, and where could it lead.
