Europe-Israel relations amid talks of West Bank annexation
When Binyamin Netanyahu and Benny Gantz formed their co-equal cabinet several weeks ago, both Israeli leaders agreed that Jerusalem would start a move to extend its sovereignty over parts of the disputed territories on the West Bank of the Jordan River, provided Washington gave its blessing the designated territories and consequential measures involved. While this condition is yet to be met, there has been firm opposition to the proposed annexation by leaders of the European Union and its major member states - with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas flying to Jerusalem to counsel Israel to reconsider its unilateral initiative.
