A tough community of Druzes lives on the Golan Heights in Israel. Recent events in Syria have a strong impact on them. Druzes are an ethnic minority which separated from Islam almost thousand years ago.
Druzes live in Israel, in Lebanon, and particularly in Syria. When Israel conquered Golan Heights from Syria in the war of 1967, it also took hold of four Druze villages populated by 20000 inhabitants. Many families were separated from their relatives on the Syrian side. Most of the villagers declined the citizenship of Israel offered to them, but chose to stay loyal to the Syrian government. Yet they are not hostile towards the state of Israel either.
